Defense-in-depth has undergone fundamental change with the advent of mobile devices, the ubiquity of mobile workforces, and cloud computing.  The defined security perimeter we so heavily relied on in the '90s is an archaic principle.  We define this distributed mobile, cloud, and hybrid perimeter as the "fuzzy" perimeter.

 

What has not changed is that businesses need multiple strategies and the right solutions correctly deployed to mitigate avenues of potential compromise. Solutions need to work together to share threat information to actively defend, and ideally, self-heal.  Unfortunately, the security landscape is vast and fragmented. Security engineers become enamored with tools and fail to account for the bigger picture of a heterogeneous environment.
